I pulled the plug from the iMac realizing that whatever had just happened was probably not a 'feature' of OS X and was not good. I was left sitting in front of a dead iMac. I looked out the window to see if someone was running away with a high-powered rifle, but the street was empty. There was no visible damage to the computer, no smoke, no scorching marks. And yes, it scared the KRAP out of me, nearly sending me through the ceiling! It took a few seconds for my brain to catch up to what had happened. The iMac literally EXPLODED! Well, more of a POP - very loud, somewhere between a firecracker and a gunshot. I was happily continuing my day, with my back slightly turned to the iMac to work on my Company (Windows) laptop, when apparently the old iMac had decided it no longer appreciated all the disrespect and. Apple "Backup" automatically backed-up all the important updated data-files to my MobileMe iDisk, and Time-Machine finished automatically backing up all ~20GB of everything else (Music, photos, videos, porn, etc) to an external hardrive.

Thursday night, after researching all the options, I went to and placed an order for a new 21" iMac with 8GB RAM and SSD hardrives - the new baby is on the way!įriday morning started like any other day. She has seen it at the house and would be more than happy to fork-over $500 for it (although, it would probably go for much more on eBay, she's a friend). On Thursday afternoon I talked to a few friends and lined up a buyer for my beloved old iMac. The thought of our iMac suddenly dying without warning was a concern - afterall, it is over 5 years old - that is over 75 years old in "computer years"! Since the "family" iMac is used for a few critical tasks such as managing the family finances, the "business" finances and, running a few websites, I started considering replacing old-faithful with a newer, better, stronger (and prettier) iMac. I believe there is data to support that Apple hardware components (hard drives, LCD, motherboard components, etc) are better than many cheapo no-name PC's, I doubt those components are any better or higher quality than what you would find on any Dell PC. And although some will tell you "Apple uses higher quality parts", I'm not sure there is much weight to that argument.

Yes, while I will give you many arguments why I think a Mac using OS/X is a better choice for me than a PC running Windows, an Apple computer is still built with "parts" just like any PC.

The iMac is on/being used from 2-10 hours/day pretty much 365 days/year - it has a lot of miles! Even though it has been running great - still runs as fast today on Snow Leopard as it did the day I bought it with OS X Tiger, it's age had become a concern. It's a 24-Inch Intel model that I purchased back in 2006 and it has served me well. You've probably seen my posts from the past bragging about how much I love my iMac.
